Don't worry about whether you get a .gz or .bz2 file. The scripts will transparently deal with either.
Once you have this 53 MB of raw material on your file system, use this script to unpack and apply patches. The unpacked form takes up about 300 MB, and we haven't started compiling anything yet. Hey, disks are cheap!
